TOLEDO, Ohio — The city of Toledo announced the indefinite closure of an Old Orchard intersection, describing it as a project to enhance the safety and quality of life in the neighborhood.

In a traffic bulletin issued Thursday, the city said it would begin the closure of Marvin Avenue at Wendover Drive, located between Monroe Street and Central Avenue, on Thursday. The closure would last "indefinitely," the bulletin said.

In a letter to the community dated from Wednesday, the city's department of transportation included more information on the project. It said the city will install Thursday four large flower pots at the eastern limit of Marvin Avenue, where it intersects with Wendover Drive.

The planters, each 4 feet in diameter will divert traffic from cutting into the neighborhood. The city said it has done this to "enhance the safety and quality of life on our streets," and it took the initiative of the project after receiving requests from neighbors.

The closure itself will prevent motorists traveling on Marvin from entering Wendover, and motorists from Wendover from entering Marvin Avenue. Drivers who are exiting the neighborhood from Marvin, the city said, "will now be redirected to use Aldringham Road or another nearby cross street."

The project is a part of the city's Vision Zero initiative, described on the city's site as "a holistic strategy that seeks to eliminate avoidable loss of live by promoting health, safety and mobile equity." It seeks to reduce roadway fatalities to zero by the year 2031. It highlights a number of high-injury roadways throughout the city.
