TOLEDO, Ohio — Snowbirds looking for a flightless (and roadless) avenue to warmer weather this winter now have their answer: passenger train company Amtrak is offering a new route that connects part of the Midwest to Florida.
In a press release Monday, Amtrak announced a new, albeit temporary route: the "Floridian." This route will offer daily trains from Chicago to Miami beginning Nov. 10. The route is a combination of two other routes, "Capitol Limited" and "Silver Star".
The temporary combination of routes is due to a railway tunnel rehabilitation project in New York, where the Silver Star originates. Due to construction demands, one tunnel tube will be closed at a time, Amtrak said in the release.
The path of the Floridian begins where Capitol Limited starts - in Chicago - and continues along Silver Star's route from Washington, D.C. to Miami. The Floridian will still visit existing stops on both routes, including Toledo, Pittsburgh, Savannah and more.
A map of the route is included below:
Meanwhile, daily train service will remain in operation between New York City and Miami on the "Silver Meteor".
Amtrak did not say how long the route would remain in operation, though the tunnel restoration project prompting the change is scheduled for completion in 2027, according to Amtrak's site.
