Thanksgiving travel expected to break a record

Here's what to expect if you plan to travel this holiday season.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The holiday season is upon us which means the roads and skies will be booming with traffic.

AAA projected there will be 2 million more people driving, flying, or cruising this year compared to the last two years. 80 million people in total are expected to travel at least 50 miles away from home.

AAA said travelers may even break a new record for holiday travel. Some areas may see more traffic than others.

"Europe is so popular right now. Africa is also very popular and Alaska. But Europe always tends to be the number one destination that people want to go to," said Christi Anne Box, a travel agent from Central Travel in Sylvania.

Box warns travelers to be prepared for cancellations, weather and congestion.

She said there are a few items to help travelers create a backup plan and they should always be accessible during holiday travel.

This includes:

  • A photo ID and Passport
  • Phone numbers and contact information for your final destination point, including hotels and resorts
  • Receipts for all your travel related expenses

Box said the most important thing to pack is your patience.

"We need to have patience," Box said. "Everyone is wanting to get to their final destination. They want to see family, they want to be able to celebrate and part of that is our nerves. They can be a little shot from traveling if there's a delay or cancellation so have a backup plan."

Triple-A said to expect more travelers out on the roads than flying in the sky, with a record 71.7 million people traveling by car this Thanksgiving.
