TOLEDO, Ohio — 2020 will be one for the record books, no question. Specifically for heat, July may be highlighted for a while to come as one of the hottest months in Toledo history.
Through the first 3 weeks the average temperature, taking high and low temperature each day into account, was 79 degrees. This matches last year as the hottest ever for July in Toledo history. Not only the hottest July, but hottest month period in Toledo history.
The high temperature on July 22nd of 81 degrees was the coolest of the month so far. Before that no high had been below the mid-80s this month. It’s not just the afternoon highs which have been this month historically warm but the overnight lows. The chilliest overnight low has been 61 degrees. This marks the first time we’ve failed to drop below 60 degrees during the first 3 weeks of July. The average overnight low has been 67 degrees.
The incredible warm weather has also worked to warm-up Lake Erie with algae blooms showing up on satellite images.
Outside our local area there have been extreme temperature readings recorded in the arctic circle. The heat has resulted in the lowest coverage of ice the North Pole has ever seen.
It remains to be seen how July ends but even without extreme heat this will end as one of the warmest months in Toledo history. Fitting for a year that has been making headlines.
