Winter weather pet safety tips

It's important to prepare your pets for the cold, snow and ice.

TOLEDO, Ohio — There are many things to take care of when it comes to winter weather.

Did I winterize my home? Does my car have the updated safety kit? Can my jacket last another winter?

What about your pets?

Here are some things you can do to keep your furry friends safe this winter season:

  1. Bring your pets inside. If left outside for too long, they can freeze, get sick or die. If you plan on keeping your pet outside, make sure they have a draft-free enclosure.

  1. Make sure they have unfrozen water.

  1. When they come inside, wipe down their paws and legs to help protect their skin from antifreeze and other chemicals.

  1. Limit their time outside.

  1. Check for signs of hypothermia and frostbite.

  1. Don’t walk on frozen water.

  2. Don’t leave your pets in cars.

  3. Check for cats under your vehicle.

  4. Remember that antifreeze is deadly.

  5. Have an emergency supply kit that includes medicine and extra food for your pet.
