CLEVELAND — Severe weather broke through Northeast Ohio on Monday evening, causing issues ranging from flooding to power outages across the area.
As of 5 a.m. on Tuesday, more than 2,000 FirstEnergy customers were without electricity in Northeast Ohio. The largest concentration of power outages is in Geauga County (1,890) with Cuyahoga County reporting 875 outages. Late Monday night, there were more than 6,000 outages in Northeast Ohio.
Meanwhile, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport reported that its phone and Internet systems were down as of just after 10:30 p.m. At 4:23 a.m. on Tuesday, the airport reported: "We are still experiencing some minor operational issues from last night’s storm that may lead to longer check in and security lines. Please make sure you arrive at least 2 hours early for your flight. Some concessions may not be operational. We will continue to provide updates as we can."
The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District says that Monday's storms caused a sewage overflow at Edgewater Beach. Visitors, particularly children, the elderly and those in ill health, are advised to avoid contact with the water and woody debris.
Following severe thunderstorms across Northeast Ohio, the National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning for Cuyahoga County and the northeastern portion of Lorain County that lasted for several hours.
Street flooding was reported in Cleveland Heights. 3News photojournalist Devin Lamb was able to get images of some cars overtaken by water on W. 117th near Madison in Lakewood.
Earlier in the evening, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for the following areas (it expired at 8:15 p.m.):
- Cuyahoga County
- Geauga County
- Lake County
- Lorain County
- Northwestern Portage County
- Northeastern Huron County
- Erie County
- Northern Summit County
- Southwestern Ashtabula County
At 7:25 p.m., severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 16 miles northwest of Timberlake to 6 miles northwest of Euclid to 6 miles northeast of Milan, moving southeast at 35 mph. The NWS says 60 mph wind gusts are possible along with damage to trees and power lines.
The 3News Weather Team says a refreshing airmass is on the way to NE Ohio later this week--all behind a cold front that moves through early Tuesday morning. After showers and storms scattered around the area tonight, we'll hold on to lingering showers mainly south on Tuesday.
By Wednesday, we'll be talking about lower humidity, lots of sunshine and some overnight lows that may drop as low as the 50s this weekend. Wow! What a change.
