ALERT DAY: How to prepare for Tuesday's extreme heat | WTOL 11 Weather

A stretch of hot weather will culminate in temperatures in the mid-90s on Tuesday. Dehydration and heat exhaustion can occur much more frequently than usual.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The WTOL 11 weather team has issued an Alert Day for Tuesday as extreme heat and humidity are expected to impact the region. Tuesday will bring the hottest temperatures since June and rising humidity will contribute to triple-digit heat indices.

In this article, Meteorologist John Burchfield breaks down when the worst of the heat will arrive, how it may impact you and your family, and what you need to do to prepare.

When

The warm start to the weekend is just a preview of the summer heat on tap for the workweek. Sunday afternoon will turn warmer and muggier with high temperatures near 90 degrees. You’ll feel the increased humidity Monday morning at the bus stop with temperatures already near 70°.

Monday afternoon will feel hot and muggy with highs in the low 90s and heat indices in the mid-90s. The most significant summer heat will arrive Tuesday, which will bring some of the hottest and muggiest conditions of the summer.

High temperatures will surge to the mid-90s and the “feels like” may climb to 100-105. Extreme heat will impact after-school practices and games. If you or your kids are out in the afternoon heat, emphasize frequent hydration with electrolytes and take many breaks in the shade. The worst of the heat will back off Tuesday evening, although warm weather is expected for the remainder of the workweek.

Impact

Late summer heat will impact outdoor laborers as well as student-athletes and recreational runners, walkers, and cyclists. Outdoor games, practices, and events may be cancelled or postponed due to the high temperatures and humidity.

With heat indices in the triple-digits, dehydration and heat exhaustion can occur much more frequently than usual. Prolonged strenuous activity in the hot Sun can be dangerous, especially for young athletes and those who aren’t accustomed to exercising in these conditions. Though warm weather will impact outdoor plans all week, the worst of the heat will be done by Tuesday evening.

Need

Preparing for the heat may involve preemptive hydration Sunday and Monday in anticipation of the hottest conditions. Student-athletes should drink electrolyte-rich beverages frequently throughout Tuesday’s Alert Day. Drinking 8 ounces of fluid every 15 minutes or 32 ounces per hour is recommended during outdoor recreation.

In practical terms, one "gulp” of liquid is about half an ounce, so kids should aim for 15 to 20 gulps every 15 minutes. Additionally, taking frequent breaks in the shade will be necessary, especially for those working or exercising in the heat.

Those who work in construction and manual labor outside should pack sports drinks and other beverages rich in electrolytes in addition to just plain water. Even though the worst of the heat will ease up Tuesday evening, hydrating after activities is important, and should be a priority for the rest of the week, especially for those high school football players competing Friday evening.
