OHIO, USA — Severe weather season is right around the corner, which is why this is an important week to prepare in case severe weather happens.
One key tip is to have multiple ways to receive alerts.
The WTOL 11 Weather team issues ALERT DAYS to give you a heads up on the weather that is on the way and how it could be impactful to your day.
It's also important to know the difference between a watch and a warning when they are issued. A watch is when the ingredients for the storm are present. A warning is when the storm is happening and you need to take shelter.
Having a safety plan in place before storms is another key to keeping you safe. Severe Weather Awareness Week is to help you be aware of what you need to do and where to go when a storm strikes.
On Wednesday, March 20 at 9:50 a.m., there will be a statewide tornado drill for Ohio.
The National Weather Service has an acronym to remember: DUCK
D - Down to the lowest level
U - Under something sturdy, stay away from windows
C – Cover your head and get as close as you can to the center of the house.
K – Keep in shelter until the threat has passed
Severe weather season for Ohio typically begins in May, but storms can happen any time of the year.
