TOLEDO, Ohio — Friday's winter storm brought some snow accumulation, cold temperatures and wind gusts, making already bitter air frigid.
Wind gusts over 50 mph are expected to continue through Friday, but when will they die down? The WTOL 11 Weather Team explains when you can expect winds to slow, as well as the science behind intense wind speeds.
Throughout Friday afternoon and evening, winds will peak between 50 and 55 mph. Overnight and into Saturday, expect winds to fall slightly to 40-45 mph gusts. Wind speeds will continue to decrease throughout Saturday, ending the day with wind speeds of a more manageable--but still blustery--25-35 mph.
These powerful winds surround a low pressure system, or a cyclone, that continued to strengthen. The winds expand outwards from the center of a storm, which passed over northwest Ohio early Friday morning and continued to strengthen.
Storms strengthen as pressure drops, and changes in pressure cause winds; therefore, the stronger the storm, the stronger the winds. Although the storm began weakening Friday afternoon, the powerful winds it created will remain through Saturday afternoon.
The WTOL 11 Weather team will continue to monitor this storm, and provide updates on the WTOL 11 Weather app. The team will also have coverage on air and online, including WTOL 11 +.
