Remnants of Tropical Storm Beryl moving into Ohio, Michigan Tuesday night, Wednesday morning | WTOL 11 Weather

Texas saw the brunt of Post-Tropical Storm Beryl’s wind and rain, but by Tuesday and Wednesday northwest Ohio could see rounds of heavy rain.

TOLEDO, Ohio — After making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane early Monday morning, Hurricane Beryl has weakened to a tropical storm.

Though wind speeds have diminished, this storm continues to deliver severe weather and flooding rain to the south. The remnants of Beryl will impact Ohio and Michigan as the storm turns northeast.

So how should you prepare for the impacts of Beryl? Meteorologist John Burchfield explains.

When will Beryl remnants reach the Toledo area?

Tuesday night into Wednesday

Tuesday night, the low-pressure system associated with Beryl will move into the Ohio River Valley, delivering rounds of rain and thunderstorms to the lower Great Lakes.

Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana will feel the impacts of this former hurricane Tuesday night into Wednesday. You’ll see soaking rain chances in the WTOL 11 10-day forecast.

Impact

Soaking rainfall and a few thunderstorms

Though Beryl pummeled the Caribbean and coast of Texas with hurricane force winds and flooding rainfall, the biggest impact to northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan will be steady rain.

The heaviest rain will occur Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning as most are asleep. Wednesday morning will feel damp and muggy, but a dry slot will bring breaks from the rain as the low-pressure system moves over northwest Ohio.

More isolated pop-up showers and thunderstorms may develop Wednesday afternoon, though rainfall does not look widespread.

So how much rain can you expect from the remnants of Beryl? Most of the region will receive at least an inch of rainfall through Wednesday evening, but isolated amounts closer to two inches are possible west of Toledo.

An axis of heavier rainfall will likely develop in northwest Indiana and northeast Illinois, and 3 to 5 inches of rain may cause flooding concerns.

Locations far northwest of the metro, including Hillsdale and Bryan, could pick up 3 inches of rainfall.

A slight eastward shift in the storm track could result in localized flooding for parts of far northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.

Need

Adjust outdoor plans and prepare for steady rain

Now is the time to prepare for steady rain and areas of localized flooding Tuesday night into Wednesday. Inspect your sump pump system before the rain arrives to make sure your basement remains flood-free.

Bring patio furniture indoors Tuesday before the heaviest rainfall arrives. Adjust outdoor plans that may be impacted by rain and thunderstorms.

Sporting events and practices may be postponed or canceled, and area baseball diamonds and golf courses could become saturated with water.

Additionally, a few isolated thunderstorms could bring lightning and wind to the region. By Wednesday evening, rain chances will grow more scattered, so many outdoor activities will be unaffected.

Even though Ohio and Michigan are over 1000 miles away from the Gulf of Mexico, tropical storm systems can impact the Great Lakes region.

The WTOL 11 weather team will keep you informed as to when the storm will arrive, how it will impact your week, and what you need to do to prepare.
