Weather Wise | What's the coldest Easter in Toledo History?

Meteorologist Diane Phillips breaks down an old wives tale and turns back the clock to see what the coldest Easter has been in northwest Ohio.

TOLEDO, Ohio — It is Easter weekend, and there is plenty of fun to be had. Whether you’re traveling or hunting for eggs, the forecast will be cool.

Average temperatures for an Easter this late would be in the low 60s. Forecasted highs are in the upper 40s for this Sunday.

There is an old wives tale that says if it rains on Easter Sunday, it will rain the next 7 Sundays. Which, when you look at the WTOL 11 Weather 10-Day forecast, is not true.

Though both Sundays look dry, the temperatures will be vastly different. This Sunday’s cool-down turns into heat a week later. The reason that this wives' tale came into existence is that the weather pattern roughly brings storms every 7 days. The jet stream can get into a repeating pattern, but a shift can change the pattern.

But what about Easter historically? It will be chilly this Easter, but is it anywhere near the coldest?

Well, looking back at Easter weather history, the warmest high temperature for the holiday is 87° set in 1941. The coldest high temperature on Easter was 27° in 1940, just a year earlier.

The biggest reason for the difference is that Easter was in March in 1940, while in 1941 Easter was in April.

As far as snow on the holiday, there have been 19 Easter Days with snowflakes falling.
