Armed man whom police shot in downtown Toledo pleads guilty to 2 charges

A Toledo police officer shot Darnell Pepper on Oct. 26, 2023 on Superior Street after they saw him with a weapon.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A man whom Toledo police shot in October 2023 after fleeing police while carrying a weapon pleaded guilty to two charges Tuesday, according to court documents.

According to court records, Darnell Peppers, 24, withdrew his previous plea of not guilty in Lucas County Common Pleas Court, and pleaded guilty to attempted carrying of a concealed weapon, a fifth-degree felony; and resisting arrest, a fourth-degree felony.

The original charges on which Pepper was indicted included carrying a concealed weapon, resisting arrest and obstructing official business.

Peppers was arrested after police said they noticed him wearing an unusual amount of clothing for a warm day, and a bulge in his hoodie pocket that looked like a weapon.

When officers attempted to stop Peppers, who was walking toward a crowded bus stop, to talk to him, police said he ran.

A brief foot pursuit continued to Orange and North Superior streets, in front of the Blade building.

An officer yelled that Peppers had a weapon and ordered him to get down on the ground. Peppers then turned toward the officer with the gun in his hand and Fischer shot him, grazing his thigh.

Officers found a Ruger 9mm gun on Peppers, Troendle said. The gun was loaded with 17 rounds, one of which was in the chamber, he said.

A Lucas County grand jury later determined no charges were necessary for the Toledo police officer who shot an armed man in downtown Toledo in October.

Peppers was also arrested in an unrelated incident in January after allegedly firing a shot from one apartment unit into another. He was charged with having weapons under disability/indictment or conviction of felony. Authorities later declined to prosecute those charges.
