Suspect charged with murder in September shooting after victim dies

Cory O'Conner was initially arrested and charged with felonious assault in September. He was indicted for murder and pleaded not guilty to all charges Monday.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A suspect previously charged with felonious assault in a September shooting has been charged with murder, according to a press release from the Toledo Police Department.

Cory O'Conner, 44, was indicted and charged with murder Wednesday in the death of Christopher Yglesias. O'Conner was arrested in late September following a standoff situation in east Toledo and charged for allegedly shooting 43-year-old Yglesias.

First responders treated Yglesias on scene, then transported him to the hospital. Authorities opened an investigation and arrested O'Conner on a felonious assault charge.

Yglesias received continuing medical care since the shooting before ultimately succumbing to his injuries. On Wednesday, the Franklin County Coroner's Office ruled his death a homicide.

O'Conner, who was still in custody for the initial felonious assault charge, was indicted on a murder charge. He was also charged with discharging a firearm on/near a prohibited premises and having weapons while under disability.

O'Conner was arraigned Monday in Lucas County Common Pleas court. He pleaded not guilty to all charges against him and his bond was set at $1.5 million.

His trial is scheduled for March 11.

Yglesias' death is the city of Toledo's 40th homicide in 2023.
