TOLEDO, Ohio — According to a report released by the Toledo Police Department, officers responded to the scene of a person shot around 6:30 p.m. Monday evening at the 3200 block of Elm.
When officers arrived, they found 16-year-old Najah Hasim suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the chest.
Hasim was treated at the scene before being transported to St. Vincent's Hospital where she later died.
Detectives have opened an investigation into Hasim's death.
The teenager's death hits too close to home for Denise Jones. Not only was the shooting steps away from her front porch, but Jones has a daughter of the same age who shares Hasim's birthday. The two girls also attended the same junior high.
Jones said her daughter was outside talking with Hasim moments before she went inside the house and then heard gunshots.
"She was seconds away from being a victim," Jones said. "She's still traumatized about it. She only sees something like that happen in the movies."
Jones said she's tired of senseless violence happening locally and nationally.
"It's just sad that this keeps happening and nobody says nothing. Don't know nothing, didn't see nothing. They see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil and they leave it there. There's no justice," she said.
Anyone with more information on this homicide is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111.
This is a developing story.
