FINDLAY, Ohio — UPDATE: The juvenile in this story has since died, according to police. The full story can be read here.
Findlay police say an officer shot at and struck a juvenile who allegedly fired a shot at them during a foot pursuit in the city Monday evening.
The juvenile, whose age police did not provide in a press release just after 10 p.m. on Monday, was taken to the hospital and is in "critical, but stable condition." Further information about the juvenile's condition is not provided, either.
According to the press release, officers were dispatched to Bernard Park in the northeast corner of the city for a report of "three juveniles consuming alcoholic beverages." When officers arrived at the park and found the juveniles, one of them, a male, fled on foot and an officer, who is not named in the press release, pursued.
During the foot pursuit, Findlay police claim the juvenile discharged a firearm at the pursuing officer, who then returned fire, hitting the juvenile. Officers then immediately gave first aid to the juvenile, according to the press release.
The press release does not say how many shots the officer or juvenile fired, or how many times the juvenile was hit.
The release also says the time of the incident was 6:28 p.m. It is unclear at this time how much time passed between when the officers responded to when the officer shot the juvenile.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been contacted and is leading the investigation, according to Findlay police.
The injured juvenile was first taken to a hospital in Findlay and later to a Toledo-area hospital where he died.
Findlay Police Chief James Mathias said Wednesday that two patrol officers are on "paid critical incident leave status" as a result of the incident.
An autopsy conducted by the Lucas County Coroner's Office said the juvenile, identified as Kalvin Darapheth, died from multiple gunshot wounds and his death has been ruled a homicide.
