Family identifies juvenile fatally shot by police after allegedly shooting at officer during pursuit

Family of the juvenile identified him as 17-year-old Kalvin Darapheth. Police, however, have not publicly released his name.

FINDLAY, Ohio — A juvenile whom Findlay police shot during a foot pursuit Monday has since died, according to police.

His family identified him early Tuesday evening as 17-year-old Kalvin Darapheth. Police, however, have not publicly released his name.

In an updated police report Tuesday around 11:45 a.m., officers said the juvenile had died. Police did not say what time he died.

According to a police press release, the initial incident occurred when officers were dispatched to Bernard Park in the northeast corner of the city for a report of "three juveniles consuming alcoholic beverages." When officers arrived at the park and found the juveniles, one of them fled on foot and an officer, who is not named in the press release, pursued.

During the foot pursuit, police claimed the juvenile fired a shot at the pursuing officer. The officer returned fire and struck the juvenile.

The juvenile was given aid, police said, and then transported to the hospital in "critical but stable condition."

"He was a quiet kid ... every time I'm with him — I used to always hang out with him — he never had a gun," said Demetrius Fenderson, a friend of Kalvin's. "He was always a shy and quiet kid. I was one of his closest friends. He was like a brother to me."

The press release does not say if the other two juveniles were taken into custody or if the officer who shot the juvenile will be placed on leave during the investigation.

The injured juvenile was first taken to a hospital in Findlay and later to a Toledo-area hospital. Ohio BCI is investigating.

Findlay Police Chief James Mathias released a statement on the incident just after 4 p.m. on Tuesday:

"This was a dangerous and tragic situation.  Our officers are trained to respond to threats of violence, especially when a gun was involved. A handgun was recovered on scene. My thoughts and prayers go out to all that were part of this critical incident as a department and also the loss of a life.

We are aware of the comments, assumptions and misinformation on social media and we will be releasing information as it becomes available. We are working closely with the Hancock County Prosecutor’s Office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation on releasing redacted information in the near future regarding Axon Body Worn Camera footage."

Mathias said Wednesday that two patrol officers are on "paid critical incident leave status" as a result of the incident.

An autopsy conducted by the Lucas County Coroner's Office said Darapheth died from multiple gunshot wounds and his death has been ruled a homicide.
