Man accused of violent offenses in multiple states arrested in Michigan after 2 years on the run

The U.S. Marshals Service says information from the public led to the arrest of Benjamin Chapman on Wednesday after he fled a traffic stop on foot in Lambertville.

LAMBERTVILLE, Mich. — A man accused of hitting an officer with his vehicle in upstate New York two years ago and fleeing was arrested in Lambertville, Mich., Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in tracking and arresting Benjamin Chapman, 32, after he fled a traffic stop. The Marshals also said Chapman's arrest was "a direct result of information provided by the public."

Members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office conducted the traffic stop in southeast Michigan on a vehicle Chapman was suspected to be in. Chapman then fled from the passenger seat on foot and officers pursued, deploying a taser that was ineffective.

Chapman then broke into a home in Lambertville. Officers then secured a perimeter around the home and arrested him without further incident, according to the Marshals.

Authorities also seized a firearm in the vehicle Chapman was in during the traffic stop.

The Marshals had offered a reward for the public's help in the arrest of Chapman, who allegedly committed the hit-and-run when there was a warrant for his arrest issued for criminal possession of a controlled substance.

The officer in the hit-run suffered unspecified injuries, the Marshals said. Chapman has been on the run since the incident and has committed other violent offenses in other states. The Marshals did not specify where those offenses may have occurred.

In New York, Chapman is wanted for assault, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, obstructing a government officer and fleeing an officer.
