Suspect who was teen at the time of shooting will be tried as adult in homicide of 11-year-old

TOLEDO, Ohio — A suspect in the 2021 homicide of a north Toledo child has been indicted and charged as an adult on multiple counts, according to court documents. 

A grand jury indicted 18-year-old Marquise Figures Jan. 4 on charges of aggravated murder, discharging a firearm on/near prohibited premises, murder, attempt to commit murder and two counts of felonious assault.

On Tuesday, Figures was arraigned in Lucas County Common Pleas Court and pleaded not guilty to all six of his charges. He's scheduled back in court on Feb. 13 at 9 a.m.

Figures, who was 15 at the time of the incident, is accused of shooting and killing 11-year-old Nathan Sumner in August 2021 while he and his 14-year-old brother were playing basketball outside their north Toledo home. Both were shot in the head. 

The boys were taken to the hospital and Nathan died two days later. According to court documents, Miguel has permanent brain injuries from the shooting.

Police publicly named Figures as a suspect in the homicide in April 2023. Figures turned himself in days later.

Authorities had previously arrested 20-year-old Tyler Williams in the case. A grand jury indicted him on Dec. 21, 2021, for murder, attempted murder, felonious assault and discharge of a firearm near prohibited premises. 

Williams accepted a plea deal in February. He withdrew his previous plea of not guilty and pleaded guilty to felonious assault with firearm, and was sentenced in March to 10-13.5 years in prison.
