Toledo police shoot and kill homicide suspect Sunday

Police said the 33-year-old man was fleeing from officers after his live-in girlfriend was killed earlier in the day.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Two people died Sunday after Toledo police shot and killed a suspect they said was responsible for a homicide reported Sunday morning, according to a police news release.

Gunfire erupted in a west Toledo neighborhood around 3 p.m. after a police chase, leaving 33-year-old Albert Alderman dead.

Police said around 6:10 a.m. on Sunday, Alderman reported to 911 that his his live-in girlfriend, Kelsie Barnier, 29, was unresponsive and not breathing.

When detectives investigated the home in the 900 block of North Byrne Road, they found Barnier deceased.

Alderman made a statement at the time, and an autopsy was performed on Barnier’s body.

Police said although there was no trauma to Barnier’s body at the scene, the autopsy revealed that Barnier had been strangled and the death was ruled a homicide.

Detectives then made contact with Alderman again who agreed to meet with them, before informing them he would not meet with them.

Just before 3 p.m., officers from the Toledo police SWAT Team saw Alderman leaving his home on Byrne Road in his car.

After a chase through west Toledo streets that eventually proceeded eastbound on Dorr Street, Alderman led police back onto Byrne and then onto Avondale Avenue, according to the press release.

At this point, police said Alderman pointed a gun at the pursuing officers out of the driver’s side window of his car.

One of the officers then fired a rifle into the back window of Alderman’s car before Alderman turned onto Secor Road and stopped his car.

Police said Alderman then got out of his vehicle and once again pointed a handgun at officers.

Four officers then fired on Alderman, according to the news release, causing him to fall to the ground where he began to get up and point his gun at police.

Police said officers continued to fire before they were finally able to reach Alderman and kick away his gun.

Alderman was pronounced dead at the scene by Toledo Fire and Rescue Department.

According to the news release, two officers suffered an unknown amount of hearing loss.

Police said all officers who fired their weapons will be placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated, which is standard practice when an officer fires their weapon.

In addition, police said they will release bodycam and dashcam footage at a news conference on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 3:30 p.m.

Neighbor Brian Lynch heard the gunshots as they happened.

"I heard the gunshots. I was in the living room oddly enough watching Cops. And I came outside and I seen all the cops down there, and then I seen the body laying in the road there," Lynch said.

He added, "Not normal at all, not normal at all. This is a pretty quiet neighborhood here."

According to court documents, Alderman was charged with domestic violence in May 2023 and negligent assault in July 2023. He allegedly threatened to kill his girlfriend.

Alderman was not indicted on the domestic violence charge but was found guilty of negligent assault in October, 2023. He was sentenced to 60 days at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio and was on probation for one year.

It is not known if the girlfriend he threatened to kill last year was the same as the one that he was accused of killing on Sunday.

This is not the first time police have been involved in a shooting in recent months.

In October, a Toledo police officer shot an armed man in downtown Toledo after he ran from police.

The officer was cleared of all charges in that shooting by a grand jury.

In July, Toledo police shot a man charged with aggravated menacing after his wife called 911 to report that her husband was armed, intoxicated and threatening to kill himself.

A grand jury decided no criminal charges would be brought against the officers involved in that case.
