Victim in south Toledo shooting dies, police investigating as homicide

Police responded to the scene before 11 a.m. Thursday

TOLEDO, Ohio — UPDATE: The following story has been edited to include new information from Toledo police. 

One person has died Thursday following a south Toledo shooting. 

According to Toledo police at the scene, one person was shot in the incident, which occurred before 11 a.m. near the 2400 block of Broadway Street. The victim was in an SUV at the time of the shooting, police told WTOL 11.

Emergency crews transported the victim to the hospital. According to police, the victim, a 35-year-old male, was in critical condition. 

In a press release issued Thursday afternoon, police identified the victim as Mark Overton. Police confirmed the incident is being investigated as a homicide. 

On Friday, the Lucas County Coroner's Office issued a press release, stating Overton's cause of death was a gunshot wound through the arm into the chest. The coroner also classified the manner of death as a homicide. 

Police did not name any suspects. 

Overton's death is the city of Toledo's 44th homicide in 2023. At this time, Dec. 28, in 2022, there were 64 homicides in Toledo.
