Shooting suspect barricades self inside south Toledo home, holds occupants hostage

Charles Williams, 33, allegedly shot a man and fled into a nearby home, where he barricaded himself while holding the occupants hostage for around two hours Monday.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo police and SWAT teams were outside a south Toledo residence Monday after a suspect in an alleged shooting was barricaded inside a home with hostages.

According to police on the scene, crews were dispatched after a shooting occurred near Lotus Avenue and Congress Street in south Toledo just after 11 a.m.

Police said the victim, identified in court documents as Joel Sharbonneau, had been shot while in a vehicle. Sharbonneau was struck in the back by a bullet and went to a nearby food mart on Broadway Street where he spoke with police.

The suspect, who police identified as Charles Williams, 33, of Toledo, fled to a home in the 700 block of Redwood Avenue near the site of the original shooting. Williams has never lived at the home, police said.

Williams took the two occupants hostage inside the home while armed with two guns, according to court documents, and barricaded himself. SWAT was called to the scene and arrived at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Authorities said the suspect fired shots from within the home while police gathered outside, but police did not return fire.

Williams held both occupants hostage for around two hours while negotiating with police before surrendering, authorities said.

Williams was booked into the Lucas County Jail on a total of 11 charges, including aggravated burglary, two counts of felonious assault, two counts of kidnapping and several weapons offenses.

A judge set Williams' bond at $400,000 Tuesday. His next hearing is scheduled for Jan. 9.
