A report from Toledo police said a suspect entered building by breaking a window on the first floor. Although UTPD initially responded to the incident, Toledo police would conduct the investigation, according to the report.
WTOL 11 requested and received a full report of the incident from University of Toledo police, which said it was first made aware of break-in by museum security and a UToledo staff member. Police said a museum security employee did not notice anything unusual around 7 a.m. Monday when they checked the building. However, when they returned at approximately 6 p.m. for routine cleaning and maintenance, they observed two of the glass window panels on the first garage door were shattered.
Museum security told police a flat screen television was missing from a classroom and its rolling stand had been moved to a different classroom. No other damage was reported and nothing else was reported missing. While police were on scene, university maintenance crews boarded up the damaged windows.
Just before 8 p.m., museum security showed security footage to the officer. According to the report, the footage showed a white cargo-style van with tinted windows pull up into the parking lot at the building at approximately 11:40 a.m. A suspect wearing all-dark clothing left the car and approached the building. At 12:23, the suspect was shown on video carrying a large, black, rectangular object, which was placed into the van.
The suspect left the parking lot at 12:30 p.m. The suspect then drove Art Museum Drive and Monroe Street. The van had no license plate, tinted windows and white decal stickers on both driver side and passenger side windows, and a pair of roof racks.
The vehicle returned to the building at 7:35 p.m. but did not pull into the parking lot, as a museum security vehicle was also turning into the lot at the same time.
Police later located and identified the vehicle and registered owner. They said the investigation is ongoing.
