Toledo police make arrest after chase, crash with stolen vehicle; firearm recovered

The driver of the vehicle allegedly fled when police attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Two people were charged after a police chase in west Toledo that ended in a crash early Monday. 

According to a Toledo police report, officers attempted a traffic stop after locating an allegedly stolen vehicle on West Sylvania Avenue near Packard Road at approximately 12:45 a.m. The vehicle then fled, police said, and crews followed it for a short distance that ended when the vehicle crashed into an unattached garage in the 4300 block of Caroline Avenue. 

Three occupants of the vehicle fled the area on foot, according to the police report. Police tased 20-year-old Anthony McAlister and took him into custody. In the report, police said McAlister had a possible spinal fractures. After a short foot pursuit, police also arrested Dashawn Neal, 20.

Police searched the vehicle and located an allegedly stolen AR-15. Both McAlister and Neal were taken to the hospital for treatment. 

Police did not say if the third suspect described in the report had been arrested. 

McAlister was charged with failure to comply, a third degree felony; improperly handling firearms in a vehicle, a fourth degree felony; and two fourth-degree felony charges of receiving stolen property. Neal was charged with fourth degree felony improperly handling firearms.
