Toledo Public Schools begin summer reading program for elementary students

TPS is sending out summer reading books through partnership with Scholastic for all students in grades Pre-K to 4th.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Summer reading is something many school districts recommend families do because of extended time away from schools.

The "summer slide" is something Toledo Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Romules Durant, says they always encounter when they return in August.

With the coronavirus and distance learning, he says this year it's important to make learning during the break important.

That's why the district is providing reading materials through a partnership with Scholastic for all students from pre-K to fourth grade.

"This is going to put out around 10,000 boxes of books throughout our community, within TPS. So we're excited these students will have that opportunity and hope the parents can engage in those books. We're looking forward for kids to come back and feel somewhat practiced in what they're trying to learn," Dr. Durant said.

The books are sent depending on the grade level and include activity sheets to go with the readings. Boxes include a mix of fictional and informational books.

The district says this is a way to ensure their students have equal access to reading materials during the summer months.

TPS says if you haven't received yours yet, it's on the way.
