TOLEDO, Ohio — The number of places waiting on a reopening date in the state of Ohio can now be counted on one hand. Schools being one of them and they can't do anything until the governor provides guidance.
"Businesses are open and those are such great things right now. But for schools we're like the last piece of the puzzle and an important part of that puzzle," Perrysburg Schools Superintendent, Tom Hosler said.
When it comes to returning to school in August, it seems like there's more missing pieces than ones available.
Area superintendents understand that families and staff want answers.
Superintendent Hosler said despite waiting, there are some things they do know about returning.
"We do know that no matter how we start next school year, COVID is going to be something that we're going to be dealing with. So that means that we're going to have to look at social distancing. We know that we're going to have to really focus on hygiene," Hosler said.
Safety is a big concern upon returning. Another is addressing the learning curve after months of distance learning and weeks of summer break.
Toledo Public School's Superintendent, Dr. Romules Durant said the best thing families can do now is try to continue some form of education.
"I would say continue to develop a schedule for kids to continue to engage whether it's story books, once the libraries become open, or other resources within the community begin to come open," Durant said.
Guidance on returning in the fall could come from the Governor sometime in June, but nothing is official. Until then, area superintendents are waiting for some answers.
