OHIO, USA — The FDA announced a California company's recall of mushroom-infused candy for what was described as "toxic levels" of the psychoactive chemical muscimol.
According to the FDA's announcement, which was made on their site on June 28, Prophet Premium Blends recalled several of its Diamond Shruumz-brand products following reports of illness observed in people who had consumed the products. The recalled products include Diamond Shruumz infused cones, chocolate bars and gummies, both micro and mega/extreme dose.
The FDA said 39 illnesses had been reported across the following 20 states:
Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Tennessee.
The illnesses included symptoms described as "consistent" with the symptoms of consuming toxic levels of muscimol, which is found in mushrooms in the genus Amanita, the FDA said. These symptoms include seizures, agitation, involuntary muscle contractions, loss of consciousness, confusion, sleepiness, nausea and vomiting, abnormal heart rates and hyper/hypotension.
The FDA said they are continuing to investigate the causes of the serious adverse effects. In the interim, Prophet Premium Brands have ceased production and distribution of the products, and the FDA instructed consumers to stop using the products and to destroy them.
