'It's been a while since we had this kind of storm': Cleanup efforts underway in Grand Rapids

The community of Grand Rapids, Ohio, was hit by high winds and storms on Tuesday, leaving many without power and dealing with damage.

GRAND RAPIDS, Ohio — Cleanup efforts are underway in Grand Rapids after storms left a trail of damage and power outages across the community.

Melissa Hansen lives in Grand Rapids and she said her home suffered some damage.

"It's been a while since we had this kind of storm here in Grand Rapids," Hansen said. Tree limbs are down everywhere on every street, power lines are down. Without question, there's thousands of us without power."

Damage could be seen spanning across all parts of Grand Rapids, including neighborhoods on Beaver Street to Third Street.

Hansen also manages a local business just a few miles away.

"We have a lot of tree limbs down, landed on some of our vehicles and didn't do any real structural damage at this point in this location," Hansen said.

Jeff Klein, the Wood County Emergency Management Agency director, said there are steps to take when it comes to insurance when dealing with storm damage.

"We really have to make sure that if there was damage that was done by a storm that it's documented and you've got pictures and time stamps so you can you can look at somebody and go, 'No this is actually when it happened,'" Klein said.

Crews all across Wood County were working Wednesday to get people back up and running.

"Right now, the fire departments and the first responders, everybody's been out, everybody's safe," Klein said. "We've got safe, secure scenes throughout the county and that's a good thing."

"Hopefully everyone is safe and everyone gets in touch with someone if they need help to get stuff cleared up," Hansen said. "And maybe as a community, we can get together and help everybody."
