County officials: Heatherdowns title office to reopen in August after 2023 fire

The June 2023 fire damaged the title office, the BMV and a neighboring business.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A south Toledo title office will reopen in August, more than one year after a fire irreparably damaged the office and caused temporary closures at a neighboring BMV location and restaurant.

In a press release issued Thursday, the Lucas County Clerk of Court's office said the office would reopen on Aug. 5 with its previously established hours of operations of Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The reopening means all four offices in the county are back in operation.

Since the June 2023 fire, after which the title office was deemed a total loss, the county has had to completely renovate and rebuild the office. The fire had resulted in a total loss of all equipment and contents within the office, according to a press release. The electrical fire was ruled accidental, officials said.

"It has been a long journey getting to this point, and reopening this south Toledo office will once again provide the needed convenience for our citizens living in the south Toledo area, Maumee, and the communities in the southwest part of Lucas County," said Lucas County Clerk of Courts Bernie Quilter in a press release.

The Heatherdowns title office processes auto title transactions and US Passport applications.

The fire also damaged the Heatherdowns Boulevard Bureau of Motor Vehicles location, which reopened three weeks after the incident. It also caused damage to Sebastiano's, a neighboring restaurant. Sebastiano's closed following the fire, then reopened five weeks later.
