SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — About 50 residents were displaced and one was killed in a fire at the Hidden Cedars apartment complex in Springfield Township early Saturday morning. The building was a complete loss.
The fire is still under investigation by the State Fire Marshal Fire and Explosion Investigation Bureau and no cause has been determined yet, according to a statement Monday from the Ohio Department of Commerce.
There was also a house fire on Kellerston Road in Springfield Township Monday evening, and part of the home had to be dismantled to prevent further damages, firefighters said.
Springfield Local Schools said Wednesday that its district's families have been affected by recent fires in the community, such as the one at Hidden Cedars, and is asking for donations to help families recover.
Needed items and suggested places to donate to include:
- Food items: Providence Lutheran Church at 8131 Airport Highway or Dwelling Place Church at 8201 Angola Road
- New or gently-used clothing: multiple resources throughout the greater Toledo community, including four Goodwill locations -- 3550 Executive Parkway, 2600 W. Sylvania Ave., 2021 S. Reynolds Road, 3022 Glendale Ave. -- accepting donations until Feb. 21
- Hygiene items: unopened hair care products, toothpaste, mouthwash, soap, body wash, laundry detergent at Providence Lutheran Church
- Gift cards: individual card balances of $25 or less at Springfield Local Schools administration office at 6900 Hall Street in Holland or any of the school buildings
- Cash: Use this link at the Holland Free Methodist Church's website and select "Holland/Springfield Community Help Project" in the "To" box
- Furniture and household items: Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 1310 Conant Street or the Toledo Humane Society's Re-Tail shop at 2306 S Reynolds Road
The Red Cross is also assisting those displaced by the Hidden Cedars fire and is accepting donations.
