One injured after house fire in Fremont

Crews from area fire departments responded to the fire shortly after 4 a.m. One family member was taken by helicopter to the hospital, according to authorities.

FREMONT, Ohio — UPDATE: Mark Coleman, a retired mixed martial artist and UFC Hall of Fame inductee, was hospitalized for smoke inhalation Tuesday after he rescued his parents from a house fire in his hometown of Fremont.

In an Instagram post, Coleman's daughter said he went back into the home to try to save the family dog, named Hammer, but was unable to.

Fire departments responded to the home in 2700 block of South River Road for a building on fire just after 4 a.m.

According to the Ballville Volunteer Fire Department chief Tuesday morning, the family got out of the home, and one family member was taken by helicopter to the hospital after trying to save the family dog in the fire. The dog died, authorities said.

The subsequent social media posts by Coleman's daughter identified him as the family member taken to the hospital. Information on his condition is unknown.

The fire chief also said the roof of the home collapsed shortly after crews entered the building.

Coleman, nicknamed "The Hammer," debuted in UFC in 1996 and his last bout for the company was in 2010, ending his career at 16-10.

He was also wrestled at the Ohio State University and on the U.S. wrestling team in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, where he placed seventh.

Authorities said seven different fire departments came to the scene early Tuesday. The house is believed to be a total loss.

According to first responders on the scene, the fire began in the kitchen, but the exact cause has not been identified.

The nearest hydrant to the fire was about a mile down the road, so crews used a firefighting portable pond to dowse the flames. The portable pond holds 4,000 gallons of water.
