Kapszukiewicz: TPD officer on restricted duty after video shows him swinging helmet, 'seemingly striking' protester

The officer will not be on street patrol while city leaders investigate the incident.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A Toledo police officer has been placed on restricted duty after a video on social media showed the officer swinging his helmet and "seemingly striking" a protester, Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said.

The initial incident is believed to have occurred during the May 30 protest in downtown Toledo, which was focused on racial injustice and police brutality following the officer-involved death of Minneapolis man George Floyd.

Kapszukiewicz said in a tweet Monday that the officer will not be on street patrol as the incident is investigated.

His tweet also stated that the city is continuing to investigate all reports of police misconduct.

Toledoans with any concerns about police conduct are encouraged to send an e-mail to TPDconcerns@toledo.oh.gov.
