'Potential for a strike is no more,' developmental disabilities board spokesperson says

The LCBDD Board of Directors will vote on the contract at its regular meeting on Jan. 22.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A strike from employees with the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities will not happen pending the approval of a contract, board spokesperson Nabil Shaheen told WTOL 11.

About half of the LCBDD workforce, totaling around 160 unionized employees, had not been under contract with the board for more than six months. In mid-December 2023, they were considering a strike if an agreement was not reached.

"Fortunately, the potential for a strike is no more. The two sides have settled and are working through formal finalizations of the process, which includes approval by our Board of Directors and the Board of Lucas County Commissioners," Shaheen, the LCBDD community outreach and communications manager, told WTOL 11 Tuesday night.

The employees' salary was a major part of the negotiations, Shaheen said. He did not provide further details on the contract's terms.

The LCBDD Board of Directors will vote on the contract at its regular meeting on Monday, Jan. 22. Shaheen said he expects the board will approve the deal.

The Board of Lucas County Commissioners then has 30 days to approve or reject the deal. If the commissioners take no action within 30 days, the contract is automatically ratified.
