Man out on bond for burglary accused of hit-and-run that killed 86-year-old woman

Antonio Lockett faced a judge for the second time in five days, accused in a hit-and-run that left an 86-year-old dead not long after bonding out on another charge.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Two days before he allegedly killed an 86-year-old woman in a hit-and-run on Sunday in central Toledo, Antonio Lockett bonded out of jail on a burglary charge he had been arrested for the day prior.

Judge Michelle Wagner set Lockett's bond for the burglary at $10,000. He was released on bond, and on Sunday afternoon allegedly backed over Gloria Everett in the parking lot of the Monroe Street Carryout near the 2800 block of Monroe Street.

According to the report, Lockett struck another vehicle while still dragging Everett and continued to try to back into the street.

Lockett then got out of his car, retrieved Everett's hat and put it back on her head. But once he realized she was dead, he drove away.

It was heart-wrenching" said Bob Roberts, Everett's friend and next-door neighbor.

He said she was a beloved presence on their street and a devoted Christian.

"Excellent lady, she was very committed to her religious ethics. She would often go downtown to minister," he said.

Roberts said in the last few years, he had started helping out Everett and her husband by taking them to buy groceries or run errands and had gotten very close to her.

"I could always count on her for her advice based on her feelings on people and she was such a sensitive lady," he said.

But then he learned she had died.

"I was really torn when I heard about it," Roberts said.

Police put out a warrant for Lockett's arrest and he was back in the Lucas County Jail by the end of the day Sunday. On Monday morning, he faced a judge for a second time in five days and was given a bond of $150,000.

Lockett has a rap sheet that goes back to the late '90s and includes drug dealing, felonious assault and domestic violence. He was still on probation for a cocaine charge from last year, too.

Representatives for Judge Wagner said she based his bond for the burglary charge on a recommendation from the Lucas County Prosecutor's Office.

"That is so unfortunate that this would happen to her and the situation with this gentleman was the way it was as well," Roberts said.

A preliminary report from the Lucas County Coroner shows Everett died from multiple traumatic injuries after she was struck by a vehicle, but that the manner of death is still under investigation.

The county prosecutor's office did not respond to a request for comment.
