'Turn yourself in' | New Black Panther Nation rallies for justice for homicide victim

15-year-old Jaylah Perry was allegedly shot by her boyfriend, 18-year-old Robert Shields III, who is wanted for murder.

TOLEDO, Ohio — "Robert Shields. Make sure you do the right thing and turn yourself in."

The New Black Panther Nation leader Nasiy Nasir X was looking directly into the WTOL 11 camera when he made that demand of the man accused of killing 15-year-old Jaylah Perry last Sunday.

"The more that you continue to run, you ain't gonna be able to sleep at night, and you ain't even gonna be able to eat. It's gonna eat you alive, on a day-to-day basis. Do the right thing and turn yourself in," said Nasir.

Several members of the group stood alongside Jaylah's father outside Toledo Police Headquarters on Saturday afternoon, waving flags, chanting the name of Jaylah Perry, and holding signs showing her face.

Jaylah, 15, was shot on the morning of April 17. Police say the shooter was her 18-year-old boyfriend Robert Shields III.

Nasir described the scene that he says took place last Sunday morning in Central Toledo.

"He went into the bedroom where she was laying at with her sister as they were sharing bunk beds. As she came from off of the bunk bed, he shot her in her head in front of her sister," said Nasir.

Nasir says Jaylah was dealing with a breakup from Shields who had come to her home to get some of his things.

Initially, Shields was charged with felonious assault. He is now wanted for murder and is still not in custody.

"We want to demand the DA to pursue maximum charges, and we don't want no bail whatsoever to be set for this murder at all, whatsoever," said Nasir. "At first we seen that the police department, we seen that they had real low charges on behalf of what was taking place and what was going on, and that's ridiculous."

Jaylah's father told WTOL 11 that he wants justice and is asking for anyone with information on Shields' whereabouts to come forward.

"I can never talk to my baby again, I can never see her smile, enjoy her laugh. None of that. She didn't even get a chance to start her life so please, I'm asking you all, please turn this boy in," he said.

Police describe Shields as being 5'11, 170lbs with black hair and brown eyes. If you have any information you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111.
