TOLEDO, Ohio — The only open-air ice rink in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan will officially open Sunday.
As in years past, the 2024-25 season for the Ottawa Park Ice Rink will officially kick off during the annual holiday tree lighting at Ottawa Park, weather permitting, according to an announcement from the city of Toledo.
The celebration is from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the rink located at 2015 Parkside Dr. in west Toledo, with the lighting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. During the tree lighting event, skating will be free of charge from 3-4:30 p.m. and again from 4:45-6:15 p.m. at the rink.
The rink offers a variety of on-ice activities and programs throughout the season, which typically runs until mid-March.
Public skating is from 7-9 p.m. on Thursdays to Sundays. Admission is $5 for ages 3 and up, and $2 for seniors. Skates are available for rental for $2. To check availability, call 419-885-1167. For more information on public skating and theme nights, check the city of Toledo's website at this link.
The city's free youth hockey clinic, the Toledo Ice Crew, is another activity offered at the Ottawa Park Ice Rink.
The program is in its seventh year and aims to make hockey accessible to all boys and girls ages 5 to 14. Ice times are typically on Sundays and occasionally on weeknights with sessions divided by age groups, according to the city. No experience is required and players will get a jersey and a stick to keep. To register online, visit toledoicecrew.com.
For adults, there are daily drop-in hockey sessions for players over 16. Admission is $5 for skaters and free for goaltenders.
The adult hockey league is full for the season.
A full calendar of events and activities at the rink is available online at this link.
Ice hockey teams will notice a new feature this season in the form of an upgraded and improved scoreboard at Ottawa Park's rink.
The scoreboard, donated by the Greater Toledo Inline Hockey League, was installed in the spring for roller hockey season at the rink.
To reach the rink, go north from Bancroft Street on Ottawa Parkway and take the first road on the right. Parking is available in a lot on the right, adjacent to the rink at 2015 Parkside Dr. in west Toledo.
