Toddler fatally hit by semi truck in Lenawee County

According to the Lenawee County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred in Rome Township, Mich.

LENAWEE COUNTY, Mich. — The Lenawee County Sheriff's Office is reporting a fatal collision involving a semi truck in Rome Township Friday morning.

According to authorities, deputies responded to a property in the 3000 block of Hawkins Highway at around 10:39 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4 for a report of a one-year-old child being struck by a semi truck.

Investigators state the semi-truck was a grain trailer and was backing up in the driveway of the residence to pick up a load of grain. Investigators believe that the vehicle was backing up in the driveway when a one-year-old boy who lived at the residence ran behind the trailer and was run over.

Deputies state the boy was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the victim has not ben released.

Authorities said the family was home at the time of the incident.

The Lenawee County Accident Investigation Team was called to the scene to further investigate the incident.

The sheriff's office reports that the semi truck was driven by a 63-year-old man from Zeeland, Mich. 

It is unknown at this time if the driver is facing charges.
