Ottawa Hills Local Schools holds soft opening for new fitness center

The fitness center is holding what it calls a soft opening, with limited days and times to allow no more than 15 people inside to use the facilities.

OTTAWA HILLS, Ohio — The Kaden's Family Fitness Center officially opened in January for students in their junior and senior years to use. The facility had to close their doors at the end of March due to the coronavirus but are now able to get back to serving their students.

"To have our community and our kids be able to get back in here, even on a limited basis is so important for us," said Ottawa Hills superintendent, Dr. Adam Fineske.

The fitness center is holding what it calls a soft opening, with limited days and times to allow no more than 15 people inside to use the facilities.

"We want to really kind of test the waters and see how things go. Make sure that we have more than sufficient amount of time for deep cleaning everyday."

Although it's not yet business as usual, they still have to follow guidelines by the state.

"We're following the protocols by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Primarily the big ones are social distancing and keeping equipment sanitized," Fineske said.

Fitness Coordinator, Michael Yuschak, said the soft opening was like a first day of work for him.

"I didn't know what to really expect, walking in the doors and getting things set up and having kids come back in the facility. So, it was all new but we have great relationships here and things were quickly back to normal within seconds," he said.

The majority of the students using the center right now are athletes preparing for their fall sport, although it's open to any student as long as they sign up on the list that was sent out.

Fineske said they are looking at extending the days and times for June and they will be releasing that information in the next week.
