"School Bus Safety Act" moves forward in Ohio legislature

State Sen. Theresa Gavarone, R-Bowling Green, introduced the bill in the fall. It aims at keeping kids safe while getting on and off the bus.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — State Sen. Theresa Gavarone, R-Bowling Green, took another step forward in approving a bill aimed at keeping kids sage while getting on and off the school bus.

Gavarone introduced the bill in the spring. This week she presented the bill to the Transportation Committee.

The legislation piece would double fines for those illegally passing school buses from $500 to $1,000. It also strengthens criminal penalties if a student is killed.

"I think we need to send a really strong message that this is a serious offense. I mean, what is more important than the safety of our kids," Gavarone said.

The bill also includes $500,000 in funding for districts to get cameras on school buses in order to help catch drivers who don't stop.

It's not clear when the bill might be up for a vote.
