Grand jury decides not to indict officers who shot, killed west Toledo homicide suspect

Three officers and one sergeant shot and killed a homicide suspect on Avondale Avenue after a chase in January.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A Lucas County grand jury decided not to indict four officers involved in the shooting and killing of a west Toledo homicide suspect Albert Alderman, according to court documents released Wednesday.

The grand jury determined no further investigation was necessary into Toledo police officers Zach Cairl, Karl Grady and Aaron Manders, and TPD Sgt. Rob Reed following the shooting of Alderman, who was accused of strangling and killing his live-in girlfriend, 29-year-old Kelsie Barnier.

Those officers shot and killed Alderman, 33, who led police on a vehicle pursuit and pointed a gun at officers during the Jan. 14 incident. Once the chase ended, officers could be heard on body-cam video shouting repeatedly at Alderman, "Drop the gun!"

Alderman fell down when shot, but attempted to get back up and continued to point the gun at police," Troendle said.

"It appears he is still a threat because he has a weapon in his hand and he is trying to re-engage us," Toledo Police Chief Michael Troendle said during a press conference after the shooting.

Even after he was shot again, Troendle said Alderman fell a second time with the weapon still in his hand. Officers eventually were able to kick the gun away from Alderman's hand.

Alderman was pronounced dead at the scene by Toledo Fire and Rescue Department.
