Two found dead in west Toledo house fire; neighbors react

Crews responded to the 3800 block of Leybourn Avenue Wednesday afternoon. One male and one female were found deceased.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Two people were found dead Wednesday in a west Toledo house fire, according to Toledo Fire & Rescue officials.

Crews responded to the 3800 block of Leybourn Avenue, near Berdan, just after 12:30 p.m.

One male and one female were found dead inside the home: one on the bottom floor and one on the upper floor. Toledo fire initially said the victims were both males.

The fire was deemed under control at 12:50 p.m. Toledo fire said in a press release. No cause has been determined, Toledo fire said Wednesday night.

The names and ages of the deceased have not been released.

Toledo fire said a joint investigation is being conducted by its investigative unit, the Toledo Police Department and the Lucas County Coroner’s Office.

Toledo fire confirmed Wednesday night that a neighbor called in the fire, stating there was black smoke coming from a second floor window.

Neighbors said they believe the deceased are residents of the home who have lived there for well over 20 years.

"They're very nice people and they tend to keep to themselves," Parthena Obst, who has lived on Leybourn Avenue for over 22 years, said. "I really don't talk to them. We say 'Hi.' We see them out there in their yard, doing their things throughout the summer. I think they go camping or whatever. Good people. So this is a total shock for me."

Stacy Kaucki has lived just two houses down for the last 15 years and said the fatal fire showed her how little she knows about some of her neighbors.

"The guy next to him, I don't know what his story is," Kaucki said. "It's like you see him maybe once a month, take the garbage out and that's it."

Obst said it's a sign for neighbors to start looking out for each other.

"A couple of us did exchange phone numbers today, because if something happens to my house, please call me. I wanna know," Obst said. "And if something happens to yours, I'm gonna call you."
