Local 14 rejects UAW-GM agreement

Membership voted to reject the deal with the automaker, as halls nationwide decide whether they support the terms or want a different contract.

TOLEDO, Ohio — UAW Local 14 members voted 56-44% to reject the union's tentative agreement with General Motors. The vote comes as other local units across the country also are voting on the deal, deciding whether they support the terms or want a different contract.

Local 14 President Tony Totty said members were unhappy with provisions of the deal relating to pensions.

The tentative agreement with the Detroit-based automaker was reached on Oct. 30 and United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain called for an end to the month-and-a-half strike. The UAW National GM Council approved the deal in a vote on Nov. 3.

The deal includes a 25% wage increase over the life of the contract, including a general wage increase of 11% upon ratification of the deal.

The tentative agreement also brings an end to wage tiers, something Fain and UAW leadership were advocating for through the bargaining process.

The deal also reinstates cost-of-living allowances (COLA) and a three-year wage progression.

A large portion of Local 14 members work at Toledo Propulsion Systems, where the voting took place over a 24-hour period from 11 p.m. Sunday to 11 p.m. Monday.

Though the facility wasn't on strike, Totty said the members technically were as they were getting strike assistance.

GM was the last of the Big Three to reach a tentative agreement with the UAW, capping off a few days of major progress made on the autoworkers' side. The union first reached a deal with Ford, a tone-setter for how the UAW would put pressure on the remaining two automakers in negotiations. A deal was then reached shortly after with Stellantis and lone holdout GM eventually followed suit.

UAW Local 12, which represents Stellantis employees, many of whom work at the Toledo Jeep Assembly Complex, is set to vote on its respective agreement Wednesday from 2:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Union halls for locals representing Ford workers are also voting on their respective agreements.
