TOLEDO, Ohio — Residents of Ashland Manor, an apartment complex in central Toledo, reached out to WTOL 11 about the living conditions of the building.
"I'm paying for services that I'm not getting," one tenant, who has lived at the apartment for three years and doesn't want to use his name for fear of retaliation, said.
He said one of his main issues is the security of the building.
"The gates don't work, the buzzers don't work, the fob system doesn't work," he said. "They didn't even replace the glass that was busted out the night of that incident."
He's referencing the Dec. 6 fatal shooting of 36-year-old Antron Tilman at Ashland Manor. A Lucas County grand jury in mid-December indicted a man on murder and felonious assault charges for the shooting.
Since then, broken glass on the front door of the building has not been replaced, the tenant said.
"The people aren't bad, it's just the management has no power to keep the riffraff out," he said.
The trash rooms on multiple floors of the building were also packed with trash on Tuesday. Some residents say they haven't seen the trash cleaned up in two weeks.
While WTOL 11 was there, multiple frustrated residents began cleaning the trash room themselves.
"We're doing the best we can to keep things together," resident Denise Johnson said as she was cleaning up trash. "We have no maintenance, nothing. We have no help here, period. We're sick of it."
For some, leaving Ashland Manor is not an option.
"If I had a place to go to pay, I'd pay, but I'm on fixed income, I'm on disability," one resident said.
Ashland Manor office hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, according to the website. But when WTOL 11 tried to talk with apartment staff, a sign posted on the door read "appointment only."
The apartment complex's leasing manager has not responded to a request for comment from WTOL 11.
According to the Lucas County auditor's website, the property is owned by Lucas Urban Holdings LLC, with a mailing address in New York City.
