'I'm just glad my kids weren't home': Witness describes incident involving Toledo police, shots fired at armed suspect

Arie Hall-Jones, a felon convicted of aggravated assault, was pulled over by police Tuesday on suspicion of possessing a deadly weapon.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Just before 4 p.m. on Tuesday, detectives from the Toledo Gang Taskforce pulled over Arie Hall-Jones, a felon convicted of aggravated assault, on the suspicion he had a gun.

According to the responding officers' report, they could see an AK-style weapon in his back seat as they approached the car.

Instead of stepping out of the car, Hall-Jones fled and eventually smashed a light pole on Airport Highway and Reynolds Road before reaching a stop on Nela Parkway, right in front of the Tuffy Tire and Auto Service.

People in the neighborhood, like Aaron Bond, say the noise caught their attention.

"It was more so just hearing things and catching little snippets between my privacy fence between my backyard and the Tuffy lot behind me," Bond said in a phone call with WTOL 11 Wednesday.

Those bits and pieces he caught included the foot chase happening in the back alley with three officers pursuing Hall-Jones, who had a pistol drawn.

While hard to see in the video, police say Hall-Jones waved the pistol in his hand in the direction of the pursuing officers. Bond said in the following moments, shots rang out.

"You can hear officers yell 'get on the ground' and then about 10 gunshots," Bond said.

According to TPD's report, the officers discharged their service weapons at Hall-Jones, but every shot missed, leaving him completely uninjured. He was taken into custody without further incident.

While none of the officers who fired their weapons hit anyone, they have been put on paid administrative leave per collective bargaining agreements.

As for Bond, he said he was happy to see the scenario play out without serious injury from his spot at the fence.

"It is definitely a good thing no one got hurt, and it's great he was arrested without incident. I'm just glad my kids weren't home when it happened," he said.

Hall-Jones was arraigned in Toledo Municipal Court Wednesday morning with a total bond set at $55,000.
