TOLEDO, Ohio — When cold weather changes to warm, potholes become a problem that the city of Toledo fills one hole at a time.
Cold weather prevents potholes from being filled because asphalt patches need warm weather to dry faster.
City of Toledo Interim Director for the Department of Transportation Jeremy Mikolajczyk wants the public to know that as the city is warmer, efforts to fill potholes will ramp up as needed.
"We're just now getting to the point where we've only had hot asphalt for a couple of weeks right now; we have been using cold patch during the winter months, so we just switched over the last couple of weeks," said Mikolajczyk.
Technological advancements have revolutionized the pothole-filling process. Mikolajczyk said the city now utilizes new machines that significantly enhance the longevity of the filled potholes, ensuring a more durable and effective repair.
"Our newest machine is a mastic machine, basically a crack seal with stone," he said. "So, it kind of has more of a base to it. We'll be using that much more on the concrete streets."
