Health department, local school district, launch roundabout video campaign to educate drivers

The Ohio Department of Transportation says that there have been 120 accidents in the last 5 years at the roundabout outside of Springfield High School.

HOLLAND, Ohio — Outside of Springfield High School, there is a roundabout where crashes occur quite frequently.

The Ohio Department of Transportation reported 120 crashes in the last five years at the roundabout, which connects North Mall Drive to South McCord Road.

The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department (TLCHD) said these accidents happened during clear weather and on weekdays. The department said September was the month with the highest total number of crashes.

To keep pedestrians and children safe around the roundabout, the health department and Springfield Local Schools are partnering to create online content that will educate the public about roundabout safety.

These videos focus on the dangers pedestrians face when using roundabout crosswalks and provide instructions on how to navigate them.

Natalie Haase, an educator at TLCHD, offered tips on how to better navigate roundabouts.

"Manage the speed slowly, and stop if people are honking behind you," she said. "Don't stop in the roundabout, but before you enter and yield appropriately, look around and give yourself a second. You'd rather take those few moments stopping outside the roundabout before you enter than wrongly enter and end up in that side swipe kind of crash."

The safety videos will be launched in the weeks leading up to the start of the school year.

Tayler Redinger, the Director of Public Relations for Springfield School District, shared the busiest times of the day for the intersection during the school year.

"Morning time is the biggest rush between 7:30 and 9 a.m. And the afternoon rush, people are getting off work between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. It's packed down here," said Redinger.

The Toledo Lucas County Health Department will offer a training session for people who may be wary of driving in roundabouts. No future dates have been posted for this event, but according to the health department, they will be announced soon.
