Toledo police and Toledo fire crews in August 2023 responded to a fire at a group home residence on Klondike Street and found Scott dead inside. Police and the U.S. Marshals Task Force took Hall into custody later that month in the Old West End neighborhood of Toledo.

An autopsy report from the Lucas County Coroner's Office found Scott's cause of death to be thermal burn injuries and smoke inhalation. The coroner also said the victim sustained blunt force injuries. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.
