SWAT surrounds central Toledo home after shooting injures one

Police said the home was the site of a gathering or party overnight.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Police and SWAT teams responded to a central Toledo home late Sunday after shots were fired in the area, injuring one person. 

A Toledo police sergeant on scene told WTOL 11 that a suspect was shooting on Albion Street just before 10 p.m. A police report issued Monday indicated two people said an altercation broke out with a third person, 37-year-old Travelle Broadnax, began shooting at them, hitting a their vehicle and grazing one of the victims in the leg. 

Police said the suspect then ran into a home near the intersection of Albion and Joel Avenue, where a gathering or party was taking place. Police said in a report that several shell casings and a live round in the doorway of the residence were observed.

SWAT was called to the scene to attempt to get the suspect out of the house. Officers could be seen speaking into a megaphone and shining a bright light into a window at the home. According to the police report, officers made "lengthy attempts" to contact Broadnax by phone" and attempted other means of negotiation, which failed. 

Police said SWAT fired tear gas into the home to get the suspect to leave the house. Eventually SWAT officers entered the home but were unable to find the suspect.

According to police, the suspect ran out the back of the building before police entered. 

The car that was struck by gunfire was towed away. 

Police issued warrants for Broadnax on two counts of felonious assault and one count of having weapons while on disability.

Police said they also discovered a gas leak in the home during the incident, and contacted Columbia Gas to repair the leak.
