TOLEDO, Ohio — A suspect was taken to the hospital early Saturday after a police chase through west Toledo ended when a cruiser struck the suspect, who was on foot.

According to a Toledo police report, officers attempted to stop what they described as a stolen maroon Buick Encore shortly after 4 a.m., as they said the driver was wanted in relation to a call for shots fired on Caroline Avenue.

Police said the 18-year-old driver failed to stop, and officers began pursuing the vehicle. The chase ended inside of Woodlawn Cemetery off of Hillcrest Avenue, on the north side of the cemetery, when the suspect vehicle came to a sudden stop.

The suspect then exited the vehicle and fled on foot from the rear driver-side door, police said. The suspect then allegedly ran between the vehicle and the Toledo police car. Police claimed the officer was unable to stop their vehicle in time due to sliding in the mud, and ultimately struck the suspect.

The suspect was then transported to a hospital for what police described in the report as non-life threatening injuries.
