TOLEDO, Ohio — As Ohio schools shifted away from in-person learning during coronavirus shutdowns, many still found ways to provide meals to their students.
Now that we are on the cusp of summer break, school leaders are once again making critical decisions about how to make sure their kids don't go hungry.
For some school districts in Northwest Ohio, the last grab-and-go meal service for the academic school year was this week or last week. That means, some families may have to change where they get meals for the next couple of months.
Leaders from a few of Northwest Ohio's school districts said they will continue feeding programs seamlessly after the end of the school year; those districts include Washington Local, Northwood Local and Maumee City Schools.
Leaders within Washington Local said meals will be distributed on an every-other-week basis.
Maumee City Schools will have pick-ups every Monday, while Northwood Local will hand out food on Mondays and Wednesdays.
For other districts, meals will not be provided through the school. Families will have to reserve food through outside programs; districts following this plan include include Toledo Public Schools, Oregon City Schools and Springfield Local Schools.
Meals for the summer within those districts can be provided through Connecting Kids with Meals or the United Way.
Sylvania Area Family Services will provide meals during the summer for those in Sylvania City Schools.
The majority of the meal pick-ups for the summer will begin the first week of June.
