TOLEDO, Ohio — A water leak in the main lobby of the Ashland Manor apartments Thursday has been fixed and heat has been restored to the building, according to Toledo City Council member Vanice Williams.
The property owners will pay the $2,400 bill, which comes just a week after they were ordered to clean up the building.
In a statement from the city, a spokesperson said the Director of Building Inspection and Code Compliance was made aware of the water leak, some of which had gone into the basement.
The city contacted a plumber, who was sent to the building to make repairs. In the interim, residents were made aware of warming shelters in case the repair caused them to experience cooler temperatures. Residents were not made to leave the building, though.
Letters and other mail were been placed at entryways, stairwells and elevators to avoid water damage to them, the spokesperson said.
The leak occurred on the same day Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with federal housing officials about Ashland Manor and other low-income properties owned by out-of-town companies.
Ashland Manor has also been the subject of scrutiny for poor living conditions, including cockroaches and trash buildup, that the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department ordered be cleaned up last week. Progress on that front had been made, residents said, though they expressed worry it would return to its previous condition.
